Overview
Veyl Munnar stands on the shoulder of the Mistline tea estate, 1,680 metres up in the Western Ghats. Sixty-four rooms, suites and pool villas; an infinity pool that faces the Anamudi range; a spa, three restaurants, and a hall for the celebrations that bring families up the hill.
The heart of the resort is a 1920s planter's bungalow. We kept its verandahs, red-oxide floors and fireplaces, and built the new wings in timber, stone and glass around it, stepping down the hillside so every room looks out across the valley.
Mornings belong to the estate — walk the tea rows with the pluckers, or with our tea-maker. Afternoons are for the pool, the spa or the library. When the cloud comes in at four, the fires are lit and tea is served in the lobby lounge.
At this height the air stays cool all year. Bring a sweater; we keep the fires going from October to February.

A timber-panelled hall for 250, with a pre-function foyer and its own entrance. Conferences by day, banquets by night.

Our story
A veil of cloud.
The name comes from the mist. In Munnar it arrives most afternoons like a veil drawn across the hills — and when it lifts, the landscape looks new. We wanted the resort to feel like that: familiar, and then suddenly not.
The bungalow was built for the estate manager in the 1920s. A century later it is the resort’s lobby, library and lounge, and the tea still grows right up to the verandah.

Of the place
We build with laterite, teak, lime and clay tile. We cook what grows within sight of the kitchen, and hire from the valley.

Nothing wasted
Rainwater harvesting, solar hot water and a composting kitchen garden. We measure what we take from the hill, and put more back.

Unhurried
There is no schedule unless you ask for one. The best thing we can offer is time, and the space to notice how the day changes.
